Sparkable version 3.3 is here, and with this update, we introduce an innovation in social media design:
Prosocial (spark) reactions

How it works

Why we’re introducing prosocial reactions on Sparkable
Traditional reaction options, such as “like” or “angry,” tend to focus on post popularity and conformity in responses. This likely amplifies sensational or divisive content. Prosocial reactions take a different route, encouraging thoughtful and empathetic engagement, which boosts content that sparks positive reactions in others.
Our reaction features, building on prosocial design research (1, 2), focus on shaping a diversity of positive engagements with the posted content, ranging from compassion to inspiration.
Research shows that enabling feedback possibilities on positive psychology standards, rather than abstract likes, can shift user interaction toward supportive and less toxic discourse (3, 4). This approach aligns with the broader movement toward prosocial media designed to foster empathy, respectful dialogue, and shared meaning, rather than engagement by polarization and division (5).
Why prosocial reactions matter
- Foster meaningful connection over popularity: Rather than reinforcing algorithmic buzz, these reactions encourage users to reflect on why content resonates. This helps transform passive scrolling into intentional connection.
- Support healthier online habits: By centering on compassion, insight, and understanding, Sparkable aligns itself with platforms that aim to nurture emotional well-being rather than attention-grabbing engagement.
- Strengthen social cohesion: Prosocial features can reinforce the "social fabric" by promoting content that bridges understanding and balances diverse viewpoints, rather than amplifying echo chambers (6).
How to use the spark reactions

Inspiration

Inspiration communicates that a post moved you to act, create, or dream bigger. This reaction says: “This post sparked a will to grow or contribute.”
